JEFF 1Never underestimate the importance of annual health screenings in disease prevention. When it comes to health screenings, some people might feel intimidated or afraid, but mammography and DEXA scans are quick and easy. Screening mammos typically take just 15 minutes and can even be done without a script provided the patient is over 40 and has gone longer than a year since their last mammogram. Mammos are especially important because ¾ of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease and are not considered high risk (source: http://www.mammographysaveslives.org/Facts).

DEXA is currently the easiest, most standardized form of bone density testing. The amount of radiation is tiny, only about one-tenth of a chest X-ray. The test is painless, and considered completely safe. Mammo and DEXA screening can also be done on the same day at Jefferson Outpatient Imaging of East Norriton. Another advantage of visiting JOI of EN is access to the area’s best subspecialty radiologists from Jefferson who interpret your scan and send report to referring physician within 24 hours

Interview with Dr. Annina Wilkes, Breast Radiologist at Jefferson

Dr. Blah Blah

Dr. Annina Wilkes

Q: What is the difference between a general and subspecialized radiologist? Why is it important?

Dr. Wilkes: Radiologists are doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries using medical imaging techniques, which include  x-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and sonography (ultrasound). All radiologists are trained as general radiologists. Radiologists who subspecialize in one or more of these techniques receive additional training and may have to meet strict certification standards.

All Jefferson radiologists are subspecialists. Jefferson subspecialists in breast imaging are trained in the diagnosis of breast diseases and conditions and utilize diagnostic and interventional techniques which include mammography, ultrasound, MRI, and breast biopsy.

Q: Why is mammography so important?

Dr. Wilkes: Mammography is important because mammograms can detect cancers at the earliest stages, before they are able to be felt as lumps. The earlier that breast cancer is detected, the better the chance for minimal treatment and cure.

Just as important is that when mammography is used in conjunction with other breast imaging techniques such as ultrasound, most breast symptoms such as lumps and pain can be diagnosed as benign (noncancerous) breast conditions.

Q: What other breast imaging is offered at JOI?

Dr. Wilkes: Mammography, breast ultrasound and breast MRI are offered at JOI.
