On Monday, August 26, dozens of students from Arcadia University and representatives from PHS Meadowbrook Farm will spend four hours at Rydal Park Continuing Care Retirement Community in Rydal clearing away brush, cutting down branches and transforming a wild plot of land into the area’s first “Katie’s Serenity Garden,” an area of reflection and beauty. The community volunteer effort, led by Jenkintown-based charity Katie’s Foundation for Child Safety, will start at 9 a.m.

Katie’s Foundation for Child Safety hopes to create more such gardens throughout Abington Township through similar volunteer events. The organization was created in memory of Katie Elise Lambert who was killed at age three after a large, unsecured wardrobe cabinet fell on top of her. The organization provides education to parents, pediatricians, daycares and schools about the dangers of unsecured furniture.

Arcadia University students are participating as part of their Annual Day of Service, marking the beginning of fall semester classes. PHS Meadowbrook Farm members are offering their gardening expertise and tools, and Rydal Park, whose resident “Green Team” will also be pitching in to help, is donating the use of the land for the garden.

Learn More About Katie’s Foundation for Child Safety

Katie’s Foundation for Child Safety was established to protect children by increasing the awareness to parents of the hidden dangers that present themselves in everyone’s home. Too many injuries and deaths are caused each year from fallen furniture and improperly secured major appliances. In memory of Katie, the Foundation looks in the immediate future to accomplish parental awareness through information available on this web site and its attachments. We also are expanding our mission to include general household hazards as well. Please check our childproofing checklist by clicking here.
