Civil War Event
Jun 1 @ 10:00 am – Jun 2 @ 4:00 pm

Relive the sights and sounds of the Civil War battle in Perkiomen Valley on Saturday, June 1, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, June 2, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as Pennypacker Mills hosts its free Civil War Event. Visitors can experience uniform inspections, dress parades, artillery demonstrations, living history demonstrations, music and songs of the Civil War Era, meeting Union generals, shopping, and special activities for children. Don’t miss this fun educational opportunity! Please bring family and friends, but no pets, please.

Watch your children become Union soldiers in the ‘Be a Soldier Kid Enlistment’ activity each day with the 71st PA Volunteers. They will take the Oath of Allegiance and learn to march and drill with members of the 69th PA Volunteers, which will make for wonderful photo memories. Throughout the weekend, visit the artillery and military encampments, speak with knowledgeable reenactors about their particular units, find out how they lived in a camp, and what they kept in their haversack too. A food vendor will be on site offering morning coffee, lunch, and afternoon refreshments.

A tour will take visitors through two floors of Pennsylvania Governor and Civil War veteran, Samuel Pennypacker’s home. Of special interest are artifacts from his time in the 26th PA Emergency Militia. His cousin, Breveted Major General Galusha Pennypacker’s memorabilia and military insignias will be on display as well. Galusha received the Medal of Honor for Valor for his action at the Battle of Fort Fisher, Cape Fear, North Carolina.

On Saturday, attend a presentation in the Classroom building by historian and educator Herb Kaufman whose expertise on Civil War era medicine and surgery is capped off with a display of authentic surgical implements. Visit with Lucy Cadwallader, an antique hair jewelry living historian who will talk about the significance of hair as a keepsake and will also sell it on the mansion porch. After the battle, tour the mansion and special exhibits, come and tap your toes to the music of the 28th PA Regimental Brass Band on the mansion porch.

On Sunday, stop by for an early period church service offered by a Confederate preacher on the mansion lawn, which is sure to remind you of the 1860s. On the mansion porch hear the music and songs of Matthew Dodd who will engage everyone in songs of the North & South throughout the day. Dodd plays a variety of instruments and explains the meaning behind many of the popular Civil War era songs of the day. Not to be missed! Lucy Cadwallader will also offer her outstanding talk about hair jewelry on the mansion porch. Kids may sign up as Union soldiers with our ‘Be a Soldier Kid Enlistment’ Program too. The Pennypacker mansion will also be open for tours and special exhibits.
