Fall is a great time to learn about birds as they are very active. Many species are preparing for fall migration and toward the end of the season the owls will begin to search for mates. Several Montgomery County parks are offering programs to get you outside and enjoy our feathered neighbors. Check one out for day or night-time fun.

Green Lane Park – Flight of the Falcon

Experience a live bird of prey demonstration on Sat., Oct. 8 as Cheri Heimbach of Baywings Falconry brings her education program to Green Lane Park. Learn about the amazing falcon and its role in the environment. There will be two shows beginning at 1 pm and 3 pm as well as photo opportunities with these beautiful birds. The program is free.

Norristown Farm Park – Fall Migration Bird Walks

It is peak season for fall bird migration. Enjoy a walk through different areas of the park looking for various species of migratory birds, especially hawks. Two walks will be held beginning at 8:30 am on Fri., Oct. 14 and Fri., Nov. 4. Bring binoculars if you have them and meet in parking lot #3. The walks are free for all ages, but participants are required to pre-register by calling the park.

Upper Schuylkill Valley Park – What a Hoot

Meet the resident owls at the park during a special program for kids ages 3-5 on Fri., Oct. 21 at 10 am. Learn about the habitat and various calls or “hoots” of these night-time birds. The program will also include making a craft to take home. Pre-registration is required with an Oct. 19th deadline. Suggested donation is $4 per child. Call the park to register.

Green Lane Park – Owl Prowl

Prowl the woods in the dark in search of the owls of Green Lane Park. Meet at the Stone Pavilion on Sat., Nov. 5 at 7 pm for a short presentation to learn about the birds, their habitat and calls. Then into the woods to look and listen for the park’s night-time hunters. Dress warmly, wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring a flashlight. The event is free for ages 5 and up, but pre-registration is required and limited to the first 40 people.

As winter nears, owls are beginning to court and call to each other in search of a mate. Head into the woods at the park to look and listen for these special and often elusive birds. The Owl Prowl begins at 4 pm on Nov. 13. Meet at parking lot #3, wear sturdy shoes and bring binoculars if you have them. The event is free for ages 13 and up but pre-registration is required.
