Like many flowers, the lovely purple and sweet-smelling buds of the lavender plant have been assigned a meaning in the language of flowers. According to flowermeaning.com, some of the most common meanings assigned to lavender are serenity, devotion, grace, and calmness. Don’t those seem like qualities couples getting married would like to exude on their wedding day? Incorporating the herb native to the Mediterranean region in a wedding celebration can lend elegance to the ceremony and calm to brides and grooms with its clean, fresh scent.

Lavender is useful beyond old fashioned sachets. While roses still hold the place as the most popular wedding flower, it sometimes pays to do something a little different. Lavender accents pale colored roses perfectly. Tuck it into the bouquet to give a wedding a wild forest or country meadow feeling, or use it as a bouquet all on its own for a dramatic effect. The bonus is that lavender doesn’t wilt and retains its color and scent when dried. Lavender soaps or scented candles are always a welcome giveaway, or you might choose seeds, so that guests can enjoy the wedding long into the future.

Because the herb is edible, it can be sugared to decorate the cake or even as a light flavoring inside. Invitations with water colored, delicate stalks of flowers are lovely, as well as place cards, pew or chair décor. And people can toss dried flowers at the happy couple instead of rice. It smells amazing and isn’t harmful to birds. Imagine handing out sweet little paper bags filled with dried lavender blossoms to guests for after the ceremony.

A lavender wedding could also feature a cocktail that utilizes the fresh taste of the herb for a refreshing take on common drinks. A Lavender Lemonade Mojito is summer in a glass. Another boozy version of the summer favorite would be a Lavender Lemonade with Vodka. If you think your significant other is the bee’s knees (1920s slang for the best) try a lavender take on this cocktail that was invented during Prohibition.

We are lucky to live close to several lavender farms that make a lovely backdrop for engagement photos and provide inspiration and myriad lavender products to help with wedding planning.
