The annual Leonid meteor shower reaches its peak this week, and it should be more visible with the help from a moonless weekend sky. The actual peak of the 2012 Leonid meteor shower is this Saturday at 3am but, like all meteor showers, the celestial fireworks display will be on display for a few nights before and after that peak time, weather permitting. Because the moon will have set by that time, its bright glow won’t wash out any Leonids you may see. The projected rate for meteor sightings is about 10-15 per hour, so you might want to bring some extra layers, and patience. However, if you are in an open area that has little light pollution, the probability and frequency of sightings is much more frequent. So bundle up and find a good spot to lay back and stare at the the sky this weekend. There should be lots of opportunities to make a wish, good luck!

This years Leonid shower is a bit unusual in that the Leonids are expected to show two peaks of activity. If you miss the show early Saturday morning, there will be another on Tuesday morning. Perfect timing for the late night bar patrons!
