Physical activity has all kinds of benefits no matter what your age. People who spend time doing sports tend to live longer and avoid chronic illnesses such as heart disease and type II diabetes. However, while physical activity provides many benefits, it can also take a huge toll on the body. This is true for those who play a few games of tennis each week or those who play tennis nearly every day. Injuries may occur. Locating such injuries and developing a plan to address them in the long term is important for all those who want to exercise or even just walk around free of pain.

Diagnosing any orthopedic problem properly is imperative. This is why doctors and patients are increasingly turning to the power of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound. SONY DSCMusculoskeletal Ultrasound, or MSK Ultrasound, is a highly effective medical technique that allows for easy, detailed imaging of any body part. Unlike traditional standard ultrasounds where patients are told to not to move, MSK Ultrasound allows patients to move about as necessary. A patient can flex a bicep, move an elbow and bend an ankle all during the procedure. This means much greater accuracy in determining exactly where the person’s pain lies. Better yet, it allows for the use of a tool that doctors and patients can use together to help determine the best course of action to treat the problem.

MSK Ultrasound can be used to help diagnose many common problems of the musculoskeletal system. For instance, many runners have problems with shin splints. Tennis players may have problems stress on their elbows that is commonly known as tennis elbow. Minor problems such as muscle strains and tendon injuries can make getting around hard. Sometimes, more serious injuries such as an ACL tear may even require surgery to repair. In all cases, proper diagnosis is extremely important. MSK Ultrasound is also covered under most insurance plans, making it easy for patients to avoid worry about the cost.

Another, highly useful form of orthopedic imaging is Extremity MRI. Extremity MRI is useful when detailed pictures of the the hand, wrist, elbow, knee, and foot are needed. These areas of the body can be hard to image properly via conventional means.

Extremely MRI is also unique because patients can sit comfortably in a chair during the scan and can even watch TV. The is also ideal for children as well as those who are claustrophobic and find standard, conventional MRI to be too confining. Many athletes are delighted to find that imaging technique can be done quickly and provide diagnostic images to their physician, helping them return to an active, pain-free life.

These cutting edge diagnostic technologies are now available at Jefferson Orthopedic Imaging. MSK Ultrasound is available in our own backyard at JOI’s East Norriton and Collegeville locations, and Extremity MRI is available in Center City.
