The Montgomery County Planning Commission and Montgomery County Health Department, along with the Municipality of Norristown, will celebrate PARK(ing) Day 2017 on Friday, Sept.15. Everyone is invited to come see how an ordinary parking spot can be transformed into a great public space. The event will take place, weather permitting, in front of the county courthouse on Swede Street from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

PARK(ing) Day, a popular global event that began in 2005, challenges people to rethink the way streets are used and reinforces the need for broad-based changes to urban infrastructure. Around the world, artists, activists, and citizens will be temporarily transforming metered parking spaces into public parks and other social spaces.

Four parking spots will be transformed into fun, educational spaces for citizens to visit and enjoy. Check out the spaces below:

  • The Montgomery County Planning Commission (MCPC) will be creating a livable community that features depictions of well-designed townhouses, a bike path, and a park space for visitors to enjoy. Visitors will have a chance to give some suggestions on biking in the county as part of Bike Montco, a new countywide bike plan currently being created. They can also learn about great townhouse designs and get information on an October 25 event focusing on the topic. Those visiting the park can enjoy some free lemonade, play a lawn game, or just sit and relax!
  • The Montgomery County Health Department will fill their space with fun games, coloring and sidewalk chalk.  Being outside and getting physical activity is important for people of all ages.  Some quiet time to relax, color and be creative is important for the mind, body and soul.  Come out and join MCHD for some yard games, creative time or just to sit back and relax.
  • Capt’n Chucky’s Crab Cake Co. food truck, a favorite in Norristown, will be available for visitors to purchase a delicious lunch and enjoy it in a parking space transformed into an al fresco dining area.
  • The Municipality of Norristown will be creating a “tailgate” themed space.  Enjoy music, games and giveaways. Come have a seat and enjoy this interactive space.

Stop by to see these recreated spaces, learn some interesting facts, and have fun with various activities. For more information, please contact Rita McKelvey at 610-278-3753 or via email at rmckelve@montcopa.org.
