Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, has been around since the 1950s and has become a household phrase associated with great deals and holiday shopping. But only in recent years have businesses also promoted other days like Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday.
This year, Small Business Saturday takes place on Nov. 24, and local businesses everywhere encourage shoppers to support them as they provide goods and services to our communities. To help you get ready for the busy holiday season, we’ve highlighted some local shopping districts and small businesses where you can find lots of gifts for those on your holiday list while you “Shop Small” throughout Montgomery County.
Small Town Shopping Districts
If you like the idea of shopping in a festive holiday atmosphere, MontCo has several quaint village spots for you to try. Skippack Village will be decked out for the season as luminaries line the sidewalks along Skippack Pike during its annual Illuminaire Nights. Every Wed. and Fri. night from 5 to 9 pm, shops and restaurants are open for business and offering special treats and sales for shoppers. Get a map of the village stores by clicking here.
The town of Ambler is also sponsoring specials and welcoming holiday shoppers for its annual Shop Small event. Dozens of shops and restaurants along Butler Pike and the many side streets will provide you with hours of holiday shopping. Free parking is available in several lots throughout the town for the day!
If you can’t make Shop Small Saturday, you can still support any local business in your area. Be sure to not miss Chestnut Hill’s annual festivities during Doe and Stag nights throughout the bustling urban village. Festively decorated businesses located along Germantown Ave. offer extended hours on Wed. evenings until 9 pm on Nov 28, and Dec. 5, 12 and 19th. Enjoy roasted chestnuts, live brass music and carolers.
If you need ideas for holiday gift giving, check out these local small businesses offering specialty items in a variety of categories. Most have online ordering and some offer free pickup if you want to save on shipping!
