Summer has arrived and the kids are home! For local dancers, though, there are plenty of events coming up to keep the kids busy all summer long from Edge Dance Company in Jenkintown!

Elevate your dance education to the next level with Edge Dance Company’s Variations Master Class Series, including So You Think You Can Dance’s Virgil Gadson. The cost is $40/day or $150/week.

Here’s the line-up:

Karen Cleighton, Intermediate/Advance Jazz
When: June 20, 2016  6:00PM – 7:30PM 

Karen

Karen Cleighton has a BFA in Dance Education from The University of the Arts, where she was later on faculty in both the musical theatre and dance departments. Karen also taught Jazz and Tap in the Temple University Musical Theatre program. Ms. Cleighton has a New Jersey teaching certification and is is currently teaching at Chartertech High School for the Performing Arts in both the dance and musical theatre programs.

Karen has taught master classes throughout the states and has judged for many dance organizations, which include: DEA (Dance Educators of America) and NYCDA (New York City Dance Alliance) and ITDI (International Teachers of Dance Inc).

Karen’s choreography has been seen at several universities and her work on “Thoroughly Modern Millie” landed her a Barrymore nomination for best choreography in a musical. We are very excited to host Ms. Cleighton who can’t wait to share her passion for dance with us!

Virgil Gadson, Intermediate/Advanced HipHop
When: June 21, 2016  6:00PM – 7:30PM 

Virgil Gadson is a dancer, actor choreographer and educator from Philadelphia, Pa. He has appeared on TV shows like “America’s Got Talent”, MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew”, and placed as a finalist on season 12 of Fox’s Emmy nominated reality show “So You Think You Can Dance.” Virgil was nominated for a Fred Astaire Award for his Broadway debut as a principal dancer/actor in the Tony nominated show “After Midnight” along side Dule Hill, Fantasia Barrino, Patti LaBelle, Tony Braxton, Babyface, K.D. Lang and Vanessa Williams. In Philadelphia he attended Freedom Theater and became an alumnus of the University of the Arts in 2008. At UArts he was able to integrate a broad spectrum of dance genres into his canon – though hip hop continues to be his specialty.

Virgil is involved in outreach in the dance communities locally and internationally, encouraging the importance of dance history and sharing his passion for dance with the world. Virgil is a former instructor at Edge Dance Company.

 

Jaye Allison, Intermediate/Advance Tap
June 22, 2016  6:00PM – 7:30PM 

JayeJaye performed and choreographed professionally with Philadance, Philadelphia Civic Ballet Company, Power 99 FM Dancers, TapTeam II & Co., Dancefusion and Fusion 2. Jaye has toured Europe as a featured dancer (Jazz and Tap) in “Le Jazz Expectac”. Jaye created and established: Philly TAP Challenge “ON FIRE!” tap dance festival and events 2004-14, Great Day In Philadelphia Tap Photos, The Virtual Quilt project, JADA TapDance Ensemble 2009 and New LEJA Dances, the company -a concert dance vehicle originally established in 1980 as a founding director; incorporated in 1999, transitioned to production company in 2006. Two holiday dance theater musical traditions: “I AM” 1999-2002 The Life of Jesus as told by his peers and ‘Carols in Color’ 1991-94 Inspired by Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity. Miss Allison has an extensive choreographic repertory with signature works: Oluwa (1981) and Black Jazz – 101 Skidelybop (1992). Miss Allison is currently on faculty at Edge Dance Company and is committed to keeping Tap in our communities. We are so excited to have her share her skills with us! 

 Eva Szabo, Intermediate/Advance Ballet
July 23, 2016  6:00PM – 8:00PM

EvaEva Szabo was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary. She was accepted into the Hungarian National Ballet Institute in 1970, and graduated with honors with the graduating class that became the genesis of the Gyori Ballet. Retiring from the Gyori Ballet in 1988, she took her teaching diploma and her family to Philadelphia. She is currently an adjunct associate professor at the University of the Arts and teaches at the Rock School for Dance Education, Koresh School of Dance and several studios in the Tri-State area. You can find Eva teaching adult ballet on Saturday mornings at Edge – where many of our instructors still take class! If you love ballet, this class is a must.
