Do you know what you have in your closet? Chances are that you don’t. Most likely it’s full of clothes you no longer wear, and it’s packed so tight you have trouble reaching the back. You find yourself wearing the same “go to” outfits a few times a week. It’s time for a change.

The stylists at Timeless Styles are offering up expert tips to help you take back control of your closet.

Start by purging your closet and throwing away stained items, resell or donate the out-of-style and too small, too big. Consider your body as two pieces — the waist down comprises your basic wardrobe – that’s your skirts, pants, dresses, suits – and the waist up is for your add-ons – tops, blazers, sweaters, and accessories. Commit to buying the best quality clothing you can afford. And quality isn’t synonymous with brand; it’s the type of fabric, the strength of the material, and the stitching.

Once you’ve removed the clutter (Phew! Doesn’t that feel good?), here are twenty rules to live by to build the most dynamic wardrobe without breaking the budget:

  • Your basic wardrobe should consist of two to three pairs of pants. Plan for a similar inventory of skirts, dresses and/or suits in neutral colors — black, brown, grey, and navy.
  • Buy multi-season fabrics such as cotton, rayon, and blends.
  • Stick to classic styles such as boot leg pants, straight skirts and dresses, and tailored jackets.
  • Include at least 2 pairs of black leggings in your wardrobe. Keep in mind tht black is slimming and versatile.
  • Buy at least one black dress that can be dressed up or down with accessories.
  • Your neutral colored basic wardrobe should make up about 50% to 60% of what’s in your closet. The remainder, 40% to 50% will accommodate the add-ons for the upper half of your body — tops, sweaters, scarves, and jewelry.
  • Replace your purged tops, sweaters, and blazers with new purchases, one for one.
  • The top half of your body is where you bring in color, pattern, and the latest trends.
  • Choose colors that complement your complexion and look flattering when worn, include neutrals.
  • Buy tops, such as tunics, that can stand alone or be worn with sweaters and blazers.
  • Buy a mix of solid color tops as solid colors stay in style longer, 3 to 5 years.
  • Avoid patterns that are large and bold as they are in style for just one season.
  • Buy a few sleeveless tops that can be worn in summer and layered for fall.
  • Buy blazers that go with more than one color, such as true blues, reds, and purples.
  • Avoid fad colors such as chartreuse and orange because they go out of style quickly.
  • Use scarves to add color, pattern, and personality to your wardrobe.
  • Keep your scarves as they rarely go out of style.
  • Add belts that complement your figure… chain and mid to wide buckle belts for plus size women and narrow to mid size stretch and buckle belts for petite women.
  • Buy jewelry that will complement your top collection and your body size — clean lines and varied lengths works well. While you can match jewelry metals staying with just one color, silver or gold, can save you money
  • Always buy jewelry that is sturdy and designed to last

The sayings, “you get what you pay for” and “more is less” are true when buying clothing. In the long run you save money by buying the better quality and not the lowest price.
