The holidays are fast approaching, and whether you’re celebrating at the office party or dancing the night away at an elegant cocktail soiree, you’ll need some stylish outfits in your wardrobe. Before you head out on the holiday circuit, check out these style tips from Jill Strickland, owner of FROX clothing boutiques in Ambler and Perkasie. With Jill’s expert tips, you’ll be the star of your next holiday event!

Jazz up your wardrobe with one (or more) of the season’s biggest trends.

blanket scarfThe blanket scarf is the number one trend this season, according to Jill. Essentially a gigantic scarf, it’s been popping up everywhere for good reason – not only is it chic and cozy, but who wouldn’t want an excuse to wear a blanket all day? And don’t be afraid to stray away from the neutrals; Jill recommends purchasing a plaid version to be especially on trend. Add some visual interest with the second big trend of the season – a tassel necklace. Showcasing killer style, this bold accessory can be dressed up or down for any holiday occasion. The third big trend of the season, according to Jill, is a hand-knit sweater. The stylish and (more importantly) comfortable sweater is back and showing up everywhere from the runways to the streets. “For a while we were doing the thin, cotton layering sweaters, but now it’s thick and hand-knit all the way,” says Jill.

Look for pieces that can take you from the workday to a night out.

“At FROX, our whole mission is to provide our customers with a few pieces that will take them from work to weekend to a night out,” says Jill. “We carry a lot of what we like to call ‘desk to dinner dresses.’ We love a little black dress you can pair with a chunky knit sweater and a pair of boots to wear casually, or a statement necklace and a wrap for an elegant night out.”

Think beyond basic black.

You know you’ll never commit a faux pas showing up to a party in black, but why not have a little fun and try the season’s newest color palette? “This season I’m seeing a lot of ‘ice’ shades, which are very new,” says Jill. “They’re lighter, like pastels, but with icy tones. Colors like Nordic blue, ice lilac, and silver are a fun and new alternative to the traditional little black dress.

Don’t overdo it – less is more.

Don’t layer on too many accessories, or too many trends, at once. “Leather, denim, and ‘blingy’ accessories are very big trends right now, but the key is not to overdo it,” explains Jill. Wear one piece of leather, one piece of denim, or one big statement piece of bling – but not all in one outfit. Pick a focal piece, like a chunky necklace, and keep the rest of your accessories understated. “I think Coco Chanel said it best – ‘Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off,’” says Jill.

When in doubt, pick a universally flattering silhouette.

“You can’t go wrong in a wrap dress!” says Jill. “It’s one silhouette that works on every body shape, every age, every person.” Beloved by women everywhere for its ability to make the midsection look smaller, the wrap dress hasn’t gone out of style since it first became popular in the 70s. One tip for styling the dress – make sure the fabric is thick and high-quality, which will be much more flattering than a too-thin fabric.
