Looking for a new best friend? If so, then this Saturday is the perfect opportunity to help rescue one! On August 15th, hundreds of animal rescues across the country have agreed to waive the cost of adoption in order to help “Clear the Shelters”. With literally tens of thousands of dogs and cats living in our nations rescue facilities, the need to find them a much deserved “forever home” is a constant uphill battle. However, this newly formed intiative provides the perfect opportunity to find these loving cats and dogs a warm home, food to eat, water to drink and people to love!
The Clear the Shelters movement was created and launched by NBC owned stations in an effort to drastically reduce the number of animals currently placed in shelters. In the Philadelphia region, local stations NBC-10 and Telemundo62 have collaborated with close to 30 local shelters, all of whom have agreed to cut adoption fees (spay/neuter fees). Other shelter fees may apply.
“When you adopt an animal from a shelter, you save a life,” said Ric Harris, president and general manager of NBC10 and Telemundo62. “Many people don’t realize that there are so many loving and adoptable animals in shelters and rescue groups throughout our region. NBC10 and Telemundo62 are proud take part in this national effort to find loving homes for pets, while also shedding light on the importance of shelter adoption.”
Sadly, less than 25% of pet owners choose to find their new dog or cat through the adoption process. That number has increased over the past few years thanks to an increasing level of public awareness, but it still leaves a lot of work for us to do! The goal of this event is to help give these animals a second chance at life. Whether they were abandoned, neglected, abused or mistreated, they all deserve to live life outside of a cage, even more so because of it! Even if you’re not in the market for a new best friend, just helping spread the word on this one day event will help these animals exponentially!
The “Clear the Shelters” message can already be seen and heard throughout social media, especially on Instagram. To be part of the movement, post a photo of you and your dog to Instagram and use the custom hashtag, #CleartheShelters. Event times may vary depending on the shelter, so it’s recommended to call the facility closest to you prior to visiting on Saturday, August 15th. The dogs look forward to seeing you!!!
