AC_unitWith the official (though late) arrival of spring, MontCo residents are eagerly anticipating throwing open the windows and letting fresh air fill our homes. Unfortunately, though, spring always seems to be fleeting, and soon enough the humidity will roll through our region and we’ll be turning our air conditioning on full blast.

Don’t wait until a hot, humid day to turn on your central A/C and realize that there’s an issue. Spring is the perfect time to follow the below maintenance tips and ensure your A/C unit is ready:

  • Next, feel the pipe that is connected to your AC unit. If it doesn’t feel cool, that could be a sign that you are low on refrigerant. Ideally, the pipe should be around 60 degrees.
  • Replace old A/C filters. Dirty filters increase your energy consumption, which means higher utility bills. These filters should be changed at the beginning of the season and every 30-60 days. If you or your family members suffer from allergies, change the air filters more often.
  • Spray the unit with a hose to remove any grime and debris that may have built up over time.
  • Make sure the area around your A/C unit is free of grass, weeds, or other debris that could potentially interfere with its performance.
  • Inspect and test the thermostat for proper operation and accuracy. Replace the battery, if necessary.
  • Make sure all of the air vents in your home are opened, cleaned, and not blocked by furniture or other items.
  • Have a professional come out and inspect your unit and electrical connections. An inspector will alert you of any items that show wear or could potentially malfunction.
