International blues master Frank Bey and his Swing City Blues Band will kick off the fall community concert series at St. Paul’s Elkins Park on October 8, 2016.

Nominated by the Blues Foundation for 2016 Soul/Blues Male Artist of the Year, Bey is a Philadelphia-based artist with Georgia roots who performs with a tight, jazzy ensemble.

Bey’s growing popularity in the US and Europe didn’t happen overnight. His musical career began in a gospel quartet at age four. By the 1960s, he was touring with the Otis Redding Review, then heading bands based out of Philadelphia and Montreal.

“Historically, blues and gospel — the secular and sacred songs of African Americans — are rooted in sorrow, loss, despair, hope, redemption, resilience and dreams. Frank Bey, who returned to the music industry after an absence of nearly twenty years, captures that range of experience,” says Rev. Paul DeWitt Reid, Rector of St. Paul’s Ekins Park. “We are delighted to bring his authenticity and triumphant talent to our concert series.”

Frank Bey and the Swing City Blues Band is being presented by Friends of St. Paul’s Elkins Park, a non-profit committed to cultural and educational programs that support preservation of the historic St. Paul’s Elkins Park site.

Tickets for the October 8th Frank Bey blues concert, as well as the entire series, can be purchased online at www.stpaulsfriends.org or by calling 215.635.4185.
