Now that summer is in full swing there are a lot of great live concerts happening all across Montgomery County. However, there was one concert in particular that we felt all of our residents should know about, one that will help benefit families from all across our region. Ella’s Retreat, a local, non-profit organization has planned a night of music and community fun for all ages at their second annual benefit concert through Bryn Mawr Twilight Concerts. This family and kid friendly event was created to help fund housing for pediatric cancer families who are traveling long distances to seek weeks of proton therapy cancer treatments. Simply stated, the more money we can help this local non-profit raise, the more pediatric cancer families they will be able to help.

Ella’s Retreat is not a big corporate organization, it’s comprised of caring volunteers and who have already helped about a dozen families so far, but they need to continually raise funds in order to further their outreach. Please consider joining Ella Walsh, her family and all their supporters at the Bryn Mawr Twilight Concert Series on July 13th at 7:00pm. Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults and free for all kids 16 and under. Classic rockers Peace Dog & Katya Blue will be jamming along with the Grease Monks to fill the evening air with some awesome music for an amazing cause! Kid’s activities and fresh popsicles will also be served. Bring your blanket, lawn chair and dancing shoes! Learn more about Ella and the Walsh family below, and click here to grab your tickets!

More About Ella’s Retreat

Ella’s Retreat is the culmination of first-hand experiences of co-founders Joe and Audrey Walsh. The Walshes reside in the Philadelphia region and are currently assisting their seven year old daughter, Ella, with her post-cancer treatment needs. Ella’s cancer required a 6 week proton therapy treatment at Boston’s Mass General Hospital, as Penn Medicine’s Proton Treatment Center was not yet online. That experience has led to a deep understanding of how to address the difficult needs of families and children that will “relocate” to receive cancer treatment in Philadelphia. The mission of Ella’s Retreat is to help fund housing for pediatric cancer families who are traveling long distances to seek weeks of proton therapy cancer treatment at the Roberts Proton Therapy Center at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Focus on the Fight

Ella’s Retreat is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides lodging and logistical support for families with children receiving proton therapy treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). The plan’s distinct beneficiaries are pediatric cancer patients and family members who are forced to travel far distances for rigid and lengthy treatment programs. The goal is to reduce the mental, physical, and financial burdens that plague families who have children with cancer and enhance their focus on fighting the disease.  “We’ve been there”.

Statement of Need

“Patients come from all over the world to seek treatment here at CHOP. When families are far from home, long-term lodging can be difficult to find. In addition, it can be very expensive. Ella’s Retreat will serve a huge need for our families. This resource will allow families to focus their time, energy and funds on what’s really important – their sick child.”
