Heckler Plains Farmstead

Caroling Night – December 11th

On the 2nd Friday Evening in December, Heckler Plains Farmstead in Lower Salford will host a night filled with caroling, Christmas tales, a cozy bonfire, hot cider, hot chocolate, and an educational experience that’s fun for the entire family! Admission is one homemade treat for the groaning board or a handmade ornament for the Cedar Tree.

The core and focus of The Heckler Plains Folklife Society is the Children’s Colonial Education Programs,

Caroling at Heckler Plains Farmstead

Caroling at Heckler Plains Farmstead

which have been ongoing since 1976. Costumed volunteers teach area school children how to dip candles, card wool, hetchel flax, practice Fraktur, scherensnitte, stenciling, pottery and other colonial crafts that were part of the life of our early settlers. All items made by the children are their souvenirs of a day spent at the Heckler Farmstead.

Anyone interested in volunteering as a colonial teacher can contact Joan Dimaria at, jdimaria@chrmail.com, no experience necessary, they are more than happy to train! Click here to learn more about the way life used to be like in Montgomery County, and why it’s so important to for our community to help preserve the early practices, traditions and rituals of early settlers in our area. Heckler Plains Folklife Society would like to wish all of Montgomery County a special Thanksgiving, we hope you enjoy their Guide to a Happening Thanksgiving in Montco!!!

This is our 8th Annual Seven Summits 5k Turkey Trot. Last year we had over 600 registrants despite snow on Thanksgiving Eve and this year we hope to top 1000! Over the past seven years we have raised more than $70,000 combined for Children’s Hunger Fund, Pennies for Peace, Philabundance, YMCA’s Changing Lives, Guatemalan Outreach Program, FLITE, and Arcadia University Physical Therapy Outreach Program.

In 2013, a friend suggested that I consider the Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation as a possible beneficiary of our Turkey Trot proceeds. After checking out their website and watching an ESPN E:60 Presentation on former Villanova football player Matt Szcur who became a Bone Marrow donor & life saver, I was inspired to help save more lives in the world through this Foundation.
As a Villanova Football fan since I moved to the Main Line in 1999, I have always been impressed by the highly competitive teams that Coach Talley has fielded over the years. In meeting with him in March to discuss our collaboration I was further impressed by his commitment to the Bone Marrow Foundation.

Every 4 minutes, someone is diagnosed with a form of blood cancer like leukemia or lymphoma. It is expected that there will be more than 176,000 new cases diagnosed in 2015. Most devastating is that an estimated 55,000 patients will lose the fight this year to what can be a treatable and curable disease. Leukemia alone will cause more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults.
The Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation’s mission is to save the lives of these blood cancer patients by adding young, healthy, and committed donors to the Be The Match Registry®. Since 1992, Villanova Head Football Coach, Andy Talley, has used the power of collegiate athletics to educate and promote marrow donation awareness. His passion and dedication for adding donors to the registry has become equally, if not more important than winning football games.

Each spring, Talley recruits college football teams across the nation to participate in the “Get in the Game. Save a Life.” (GITG) initiative. Teams host marrow donor registry drives on their campuses, adding anonymous donors that are willing to save the life of a patient. These donors are desperately needed as more than 70% of patients do not have a donor match within their family.

The results of GITG speak for themselves. Since 2008, more than 63,000 donors have been added to the registry. Most importantly, there have been over 200 lives saved by transplants involving a GITG donor!
With goals to recruit a record number of 80 colleges and universities (up from 47 last year), and add 20,000 new donors to the Be The Match Registry®, the Foundation’s 2016 GITG initiative will boast a hefty price tag of almost $2,000,000. Be The Match® covers most of the expense, but it’s the Foundations financial support and involvement that helps the program to grow each year!
