Football Players to Tackle Breast Cancer at Abington vs. Pennridge Game October 9

Abington Jefferson Hospital nurses, Philadelphia Affiliate Susan G. Komen for the Cure volunteers, and volunteers from the Breathing Room will staff tables with breast cancer awareness materials and information.

Fundraising at the game will benefit Abington Jefferson Hospital’s Rosenfeld Cancer Center, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Philadelphia Affiliate, the Terry Hanifin Memorial Scholarship Fund, and the Breathing Room.

Eight years ago the football coaches from Abington and North Penn High Schools were talking and realized that their mothers were both breast cancer survivors.  Since the teams were playing each other – during Breast Cancer Awareness Month – they decided to develop activities and events to promote breast cancer awareness at the game with the theme “Score Big Against Breast Cancer.”  Thousands of dollars were raised as well as breast cancer awareness and the event has become a popularly supported, annual event.  This year’s theme is “Tackle Cancer” with dramatic tee-shirts developed to promote it.

With the involvement of the Abington Senior High School Key Club, Abington Jefferson Hospital, the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and volunteers from the Breathing Room, an incredible array of activities and fundraisers has been developed for this year’s game on October 9th.

Event Activities::

Team players will wear football helmets with pink ribbons

Abington Jefferson Hospital and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Philadelphia Affiliate and volunteers from the Breathing Room will distribute flyers, stickers, self examination shower cards, mammogram information and other information at the stadium entrance.

Nurses from Abington Jefferson Hospital’s Rosenfeld Cancer Center will be at the game distributing information and answering questions.

Uninsured and under-insured women are encouraged to obtain information at the game about free mammograms and breast health education.

The Abington Senior High School Key Club has embraced the event again this year, again with much enthusiasm and taken leadership roles.  The Abington Key Club will be selling pink “Tackle Cancer” tee-shirts the week preceding the game and at the game.  The $10 cost of the shirt includes student admission to the game and a donation. Shirts to support breast cancer research will be available for sale at the game for adults after paying their admission fee.  Last year, all 1000+ shirts sold out swiftly.

Abington Key Club members have created collection buckets asking spectators to donate their “Change for a Change” at the concession stand – and during the third quarter cheerleaders and Step Team members will circulate through the stands collecting donations for cancer research.

As one would imagine, the entire high school – students, staff, and families – will be engaged and energized against breast cancer … and will certainly be more aware as a result the activities before and during the game.
