For anyone out there that hasn’t taken the short trip to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, we can tell you that you are missing out. Considered one of the premier botanical gardens of the U.S, Longwood Gardens consists of 1,077 acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows. On the grounds, one will find exotic plants, well maintained horticulture, and seasonal displays/activities.
Longwood is definitely worth visiting any time of the year, but during the holiday season it is especially fascinating. If you plan on going, I would suggest buying tickets online in advance to save time once you get there. Although many people attend, the grounds are large enough that it never feels crowded. With a variety of displays, this is a great destination that would be perfect to bring your family, friends, or even a date.
Below are just some of features you will find at Longwood Gardens this year:
Outdoor Display: Upon arrival, you will first enter the outside grounds. We recommend going in the later afternoon in order to see the trees and sculptured plants in daylight. As the sun sets, Christmas lights will outline almost every tree on the property, an amazing display.
Outside Fountains: Also outside, large fountains are lit up with holiday themed lighting schemes. Pretty cool.
Ice Skating Show: For a small additional fee, you can view an outdoor ice skating show that features world-class ice skaters along with Christmas music. As this is outdoors, it can get quite cold sitting there, so we recommend wearing layers, bringing hand warmers, and possibly buying hot chocolate sold on the grounds.
Inside Display: After being outside in the cold for awhile, walking inside feels like you entered a tropical island resort as it’s quite warm and humid. The indoor arboretum is an enormous structure that consists of many different rooms. What is neat is that each room houses different varieties of plants and trees. From cacti to pines to palm trees, they have it all. Younger children might enjoy the small model train that runs throughout numerous rooms.
Personally, we will be visiting Longwood within a few weeks. We hope to see you there! Let us know what you thought and please send us any pictures you would like featured on our website to info@montcohappening.com.
