One of the biggest reasons why Andrew and I started MontcoHappening is our strong belief in supporting the local community. We often refer to it as ‘support local’. In an economic time when so many people are out of work and prices are rising faster than wages, we think it’s imperative that people starting supporting their local communities more so than we have done in the recent past. Only 20 or 30 years ago, before major chain stores like Wal-mart and Target, and grocery stores like Giant and Acme were around, people used to buy things from their neighbors. Small business owners thrived. Here at MontcoHappening we believe that one possible solution to this economic downturn that we are all experiencing is to get back to supporting local.
How Can I Help Support Montgomery County?

Supporting your local community can manifest itself in many ways. All it takes is a mindset shift. It’s all about being more conscious of what you’re doing and how it’s impacting Montgomery County. For example, are most of the products you buy manufactured outside of the U.S.? One easy change you can make is to start buying some of the products that you use on a regular basis from your neighbors or local businesses. You can buy fruit and vegetables from local farms or farmers’ markets. You can purchase some household items, tools, etc. from local yard sales and flea markets. By doing this you’re keeping money within the community. Here are a few other ideas for helping to support Montgomery County, PA:
- Volunteer at local organizations setup to support Montgomery County residents and businesses
- If you see trash on the sidewalk or the side of the road, pick it up and throw it away in the trash
- Start your own small business that offers products or services specifically designed to fill a need within your local community
- Join your local government agency or get on the school board so that you can truly impact change within Montgomery County

The Benefits of Supporting the Local Community
The more we get involved, the more benefits everyone living in Montgomery County, PA will see. We already talked about buying local, which helps keep money within Montgomery County. With that said, that’s not the only benefit that comes from supporting local. By volunteering at a great local organization you are helping your neighbors or possibly local business owners. Picking up trash or simply being a good neighbor will entice people to move to Montgomery County, which provides more revenue, as well as, provides more people to help in our cause of supporting local. Starting a small business helps give Montgomery County residents more options for buying from local businesses and keeping the money in the local community. It also offers them new products & services to choose from. Joining local government helps bring fresh ideas to Montgomery County and impacts how the county is run. All of these things are extremely beneficial to Montgomery County and its residents.
